Is New Zealand right to ban military style guns?
by ThomasCovenant inin response to the recent terrorist attack in new zealand their government is proposing to ban semi automatic and military style weaponry.. do you agree with this idea?.
would they be better off allowing more of these weapons instead?.
would it be better to perhaps allow more of the muslim community for example, to be armed with semi automatic guns to protect themselves at their places of worship?.

Is social media to blame?
by joey jojo ini haven't seen any posts regarding the atrocity in christchurch and i just wanted to ask a question about social media's role.
is it fair to blame social media giants for giving the offender a platform for his crime?
what are the boundaries that they are expected to police?

Traditional media tell social media giants that they should act faster or do more to prevent crimes becoming viral. If that is fair, should car manufacturers be blamed if someone uses a car to commit a crime? Should the government be blamed if that criminal drives the car on federally funded freeways?
It seems like a difficult question if we accept that social media exist as platforms for information.
As an example, footage of JFK being assassinated is freely available. Why is that different?
For the record, what happened in Christchurch is a tragedy and I believe social media should do everything they can to contain it.

A Question for Born-ins Who Had a Parent Leave the Cult Before They Did
by jp1692 inquestion: have any of you that are now exjws had a parent leave the religion before you, and you shunned them because of that?
if so—and while you were still in the cult—what, if anything, could your parent have done to reach your heart and begin a reconciliation?
it’s been almost ten years since i left the religion and my two sons continue to shun me and rebuff all efforts i make to reconcile.

Yes , I have had this experience.
I didn't totally shun my Mother but I was so disappointed in her that still, after almost 30 yrs we are estranged.
Not because she left the org but because she knew she was going to leave for many years beforehand and still insisted on being the typical JW parent. She was a trained professional before becoming a JW, yet she didnt allow higher education, any friends outside the org, no planning for a financial future, no sports, you get the idea. Yet she fell back on her profession for her entire life while I began life as a labourer and had menial jobs for many years after leaving school.
Also, I felt a little shattered and betrayed to be honest. In my eyes she was a selfish, colossal hypocrite. There are other, more personal reasons too.
After a few decades, I realised that you cannot control any other human being and someone that you really want answers from may not be willing or able to give them to you.
I really wish you all the best.

The Barbara Anderson Appreciation Thread
by Quillsky inthere are many newcomers who may see references on this website to barbara anderson but not understand the complete awesomeness of what she has done, and continues to do, in the pursuit of truth.. for those who don't know, a brief summary: barbara and her husband joe spent most of their lifetime being uber-witnesses, bringing 80 or so people into the organization and ending up at brooklyn bethel.
barbara landed up in the sacred heart of bethel, the writing department, and wrote awake!
articles.

I only heard about Barbara Anderson because of this website. Thanks Simon.
I am embarrassed to admit that it was only in the last month or so that I actually read her story in detail.
I was fascinated by the accounts of the inner workings at world headquarters but strangely not surprised by the petty, vindictive nature of some people that worked there.
It doesn't seem to matter how much effort you put in, or how sincere you are, or what you sacrifice for the organisation, the moment you question it you are treated like a leper.
Barbara, if you read this, thanks for telling your story. 👍

Climate Change - True Believer or Skeptic?
by Simon inclimate change ... who doesn't believe it?
crazy fools and science deniers ... right?.
it seems like it's become the new religion, the new orthodoxy, that must be accepted and believed as gospel and preached to all.. is it ok to be skeptical?.
-
joey jojo
Climate scientists are describing something that needs to be fixed by taking action that will disrupt our lives. There are many people with vested interests that don't like the sound of that.
I find it interesting that we literally put our lives in the hands of other scientific research without question, yet when it comes to global warming we are all expert critics.
If global warming is responsible for increased extreme weather events, how long before the costs of these disasters force change?

A healthy dose of skepticism is always a good idea.
My take is that even if we are only 50% responsible for the warming of the planet we need to take steps right now to change our behaviour.
If the science is right, the Antarctic ice core samples provide fairly compelling evidence. They have samples that are around 800 thousand years old and the gas samples taken show the atmosphere goes through an incredibly stable cycle every 100 thousand years, where the co2 levels rise and fall. Until the 1950s, when the co2 levels break out of cycle. Coincidentally, it's also the decade that humans started driving gas guzzlers en masse and airline industry started taking off.
The sea levels are rising, expanding is probably a more accurate description and if the Antarctic ice sheet starts melting, then it's game over.
Unlike other interested parties, what do climate scientists have to gain by publishing their research?

Need Help - How do I refute this???
by HappyBlessedFree inso i was talking with my husband about all the things the organization is doing ie.
hiding pedophiles, lying about what 1914 was etc.
so his response was that the nation of israel had times when they weren’t doing the right thing, but it was still gods chosen organization.. another topic we were talking about was disfellowshipping.

Depending on the personality of your partner, a point by point debate could take a long time and end up devolving until you are mentally exhausted.
There is no easy answer because even if he agrees on some points, it may always come back to whether you believe the wts is gods appointed channel.

Will You Stop Listening To Michael Jackson’s Music?
by minimus insince the hbo documentary, more people are condemning mj.
will these child abuse allegations affect you if you ever liked his music?.
-

A court of his pears choose the second option.
Really, what were the parents of these kids thinking? Maybe too busy cashing cheques and enjoying their new lavish lifestyles to really do what was best for their children.
Well, if a child is abused and justice isn't done, maybe cash can help give them some opportunities they wouldn't have had otherwise. Provided the parents invest in into their children.

New Upcoming Changes - No More Publisher Record Cards & Reporting Hours
by thedepressedsoul inpublisher record cards and reporting hours will be going away.

coming soon.. made this post 4 years ago, it happened - https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/24020002/kingdom-consolidation-sales-coming-reliable-source.

Wow- interesting topic.
Hard to imagine an end to preaching because, as stated by so many, its the way dubs prove themselves to be worthy. Remember the scripture... 'hours cover a multitude of sins' - or maybe it doesn't say that, I get confused sometimes.
Perhaps, if they remove the need to report, they will institute an attendance record to gauge a persons spirituality. That is, simply counting the number of times you preach a month compared to actual hours.
Any of the reasons listed in the thread could be feasible for the org to go down this path of non-reporting, from financial to privacy concerns. Anything they do wouldn't surprise me.

Comparison of Jan 14 and 15 days texts
by helpmeout ini couldn’t help but notice the juxtaposition of the day text for jan 14 and 15. the first is about following the disfellowshipping decree, the second is about showing compassion.
i ask you, “if an active jw were to miss following both of these texts, which one would they most likely be counseled on?”.
-
joey jojo
Hey Fink.
You described it beautifully.
It is completely irresponsible for a jw parent, in particular to wipe their hands of their own children if they get disfellowshipped.
It is still happening in my own family to one of my siblings decades after the event. At what point do parents get to absolve themselves from blame for how their children turn out? It makes me sick.
The exact opposite is the love and support I have witnessed in so called worldly parents that support and care for their own kids when they struggle in life.
